The Art The Comes Out

Project 3

With this project I started with the idea of using a man drowning and being pulled down by time, either a clock or an hourglass. But as I worked with that it started to not be what I had wanted. So I started to look at images of women being carried away. I found one that I wanted and placed it with chains and a clock. To me the image almost looks like a really old and chessy sci-fi movie poster. So I felt placing the chessy caption on it would make it even more so. Now I wanted to place this images at places where time is an issue, where you never seem to have enough or it gets taken away. The first place I put it was at school which I never feel I have time to do all my projects. The second is at Wal-Mart becasue that’s where you go to get everything when you have no time. The third is on a train at a train crossing where you can sit for hours. And the final is at the tunnel that was built to help handle trafic but can be one of the most time consuming and out of the way routes you can take in Chattanooga.

Project 2

This project was a way for us to use InDesign and recreate book covers of our choice. I had many ideas for different covers in the beginning. I couldn’t place what cover I wanted to work on untill I picked up a small book called, “Japanese Learners Dictionary.” When I saw the blank cover with just a splash of color I knew that this was the book that I needed to do. My original idea was to show a more charming or even sexy images of Japan. I first started with an image of a modern girl vs a traditional one. But I soon shifted my attention fully on geisha’s once again. I started with a picture of a young woman who had a painted face with a fan. But soon after move to the image of the woman from the movie, “Memoirs of a Geshia.” I feel in love with the image right away. She has a calming air yet at the same time a sexy look to her. Happy with the front image I went in search of a back image. I wanted something that was simple yet traditional so I found a wonderful wall scroll that worked perfectly for the back. All that combined with some chosen text comes together to form my covers.

The final stage of this Sirens of this project was to take the text that we created in the second project and create a collage that goes along with it. They way I read my text was ‘Discreet, Beautiful. All About You. Occasion Ladies.’ What came to my mind at first was the idea of Japanese geisha. And the idea that they were the original discreet beauties. But then as I worked I developed the idea of sirens. Women in the sea that were very discreet and beautiful and would toy with men making them think it was all about them. So I combined the two ideas together to create my final image. I found an image of a greek ship in the myth idea of sirens. Then I placed it in a tube of water and made it look as if the Geisha were playing with the ship. The background was one that was quite hard to decide on but in the end I went with the bathhouse image for a number of reasons. The main one was that it is highly discreet and beautiful just like the women. It almost seems like a closed in place where a siren would lure you and you would never escape.

Here are the image sets that I can not make my mind on. Feedback would be great.

Project 1.2

Image_Text_for_webWithin this project we were to chose a classifide ad and relate it to our image pair. There were two ways we were going to do this. The first was to place the clasifide ad in the image pair itself. The second way was to use a 10 by 10 and arrange the words there. My ad was about ‘beautiful, discreet women’ that were ‘all about you.’ I felt this add work well with my computision because of how the women in my image pair was beautiful but at the same is a discreet women. She does not let her true side show through and only shows you the beautiful side. She is also the kind of girl that would think it’s all about her. With the text I chose to make it all outline to mimk the image pair I have no havy lines or dark areas. I didn’t want my text to out weigh my image pair. With it in this font and outlined it flows quite like the butterfly.

Within the second chapter of the Visual Literacy book, Visible Signs, there is a great deal said about the relation to thoughts or objects with symbols and signs. When you see signs and you think of the object it is an index. When you see a traffic light and think of the action that goes with it that is an example of an index. An icon is a sign that represents a physical object. A symbol is a sign that has no visual connection between it and what it means. There are also three different levels of signs according to Peirce. The first is a sence of something and that is firstness. The second is a fact based sign and it is called secondness. And the third is a mental result to a sign and that is thirdness. Peirce also talks about semiosis which is where a sign can have many different meanings. It could all be determined by the person that is reading it. Each person has a different life experience and each one could cause a person to view a sign different from a person with a completely different life. Value, according to Saussure, is what caused a sign to have meaning. IT is where the sign gains meaning based off of other signs that are similar to that sign. A syntagm is a collection of signs, such as letters, that are in a linear sequence. When in this sequence they are read and understood. When arranging the sequence you are able to trade one sign for another that is called Paradigm.  When this is done it also creates a metaphor, which is something that is used quite often in advertisements.

These are the image collections from the first project in Photo 2. We were to take pictures in different lighting situations in different tempatures.
